Mesothelioma is an aggressive cancer caused almost entirely by past exposure to asbestos. Although asbestos was banned in the UK in 1999, it remains present in many buildings constructed or refurbished before that date - meaning workers in our industry are still at risk today.

Construction workers and related trades such as plumbers, roofers, electricians, heating engineers, maintenance teams and anyone who may disturb materials in older properties remain among the most vulnerable. Many exposures happen simply because asbestos wasn’t identified, or work began before checks were completed.

Mesothelioma Awareness Day serves as an important reminder to take asbestos seriously: keep surveys up to date, understand where asbestos may be present, and ensure workers have clear instructions before starting any task that could disturb it.
